The word 'Halal' does not bear a very good reputation in the eyes of many individuals. If you want to know, then the literal meaning of the word halal is permissible and Halal certified food means those food items that can be consumed by Muslims as their religion allows them to consume them.

You will come across certain food items that should be made permissible before consumption and meat is one of those things. Usually, before slaughtering the animal, the slaughter man has to recite Quranic verses to ensure that the slaughtering is being done in the name of Allah.

Once the animal is slaughtered, all the bloods needs to be drained out as blood consumption is not permissible. There are certain rules and regulations that need to be followed. One of these is to make sure that the animal is fit and healthy. You cannot slaughter an already dead animal as it is not permissible. Another rule is that only a Muslim person can do the slaughtering.

The halal certification is granted by authorized authorities who have credible background that any one can trust. Anything that breaches the traditional halal method could impose some serious allegations. It is an unfortunate thing that some non Muslims think that such type of food is not good. They think that the animals are slaughtered cruelly and in barbaric ways are practiced. This is not true at all. These misconceptions are present just because people do not have ample amount of knowledge regarding the Muslim permissible way and they have come up with their own terms.

Although mostly Muslims do follow their religion's guidelines and try not to deviate from it but, still many of them don't take their religious practices very seriously and think that they can eat and drink whatever they want without any worries. Besides slaughtering meat the Islamic way, there are other things like manufactured food and drinks that need to be certified as well to make them Halal for Muslims but many of them don't really go into such detail.
